The Church of the Nazarene, in partnership with the Somali Bible Society (SBS), is launching a seven-year initiative to translate the Old Testament into the Somali language. While the New Testament has already been successfully translated and printed by SBS, the only existing Old Testament version dates back to the 1970s. Unfortunately, that early translation is riddled with errors and inconsistencies that have caused confusion and misinterpretation for Somali readers seeking to understand God’s Word.

This project aims to produce an accurate and accessible translation of the Old Testament, ensuring that nearly 30 million Somali speakers around the world, many of whom have limited or no access to Scripture, will be able to read and understand the full Bible in their own language. The request being made now is to fund the first year of this multi-year effort. The power of having the Bible in one's own language cannot be overstated. This translation will strengthen every aspect of ministry among Somali people; from evangelism to discipleship, from church planting to leadership training. It will also equip pastors, missionaries, and lay leaders to teach the Word of God faithfully and clearly.

In this first year, the project will launch with translation orientation and training for Somali Bible Society staff and volunteers, setting the foundation for years of faithful and accurate translation work. We trust that this effort will lead to the full Old Testament being completed, published, and distributed among Somali communities worldwide.
